Malta Park and Ride Guide: Locations, Fares and Connections

Park and Ride can save time when the difficult part of a journey is parking near the destination rather than driving across Malta. It only works well, however, when the onward connection serves the right place and still operates when you need to return.

Malta uses the Park and Ride name for different arrangements. Floriana has a dedicated paid parking-and-shuttle service. Other facilities connect with ordinary scheduled buses, so their bus fares, timetables and conditions are not automatically the same as Floriana's.

Which Park and Ride should you use?

Choose the facility according to the destination and the direction from which you are driving—not simply the one that looks closest on a map.

The official journey planner may show several alternatives. Compare the complete door-to-door journey, including the drive, parking, walk to the stop, wait, bus or shuttle and final walk.

Floriana Park and Ride for Valletta

Floriana is the clearest choice for a driver who wants to leave the car outside central Valletta and continue by a dedicated shuttle. Transport Malta currently publishes the following arrangement:

• more than 750 spaces across Zones A, B and D;
• a charge of €0.40 per day, including the shuttle to and from Floriana and Valletta;
• parking open every day from 06:00 to 21:00, including Sundays and public holidays; and
• shuttle operation from 06:00 to 21:00, Monday to Saturday, excluding public holidays.

The shuttle links the parking zones with Floriana and Valletta Bus Terminal. At the terminal, its designated stop is next to Bay 1. Stops along the route carry a blue Park and Ride sign. Transport Malta also describes an extended weekday service to Castille and St George's Square at half-hour intervals, but check the notice at the facility before depending on that extension.

The Sunday and public-holiday distinction matters: the car park is open, but the dedicated shuttle is not. A regular bus, walk or taxi may still be possible, but it should be planned separately.

The published closing time also makes Floriana a poor choice for an evening that may finish after 21:00. Do not leave the car there for a late event without confirming how and when it can be collected.

Using Floriana can avoid searching for a legal space inside Valletta and can keep the car outside the Controlled Vehicular Access area. Marsa Park and Ride

The government described Marsa Junction Park and Ride at its 2021 launch as a 380-space facility with three approaches: from the Santa Luċija flyover, Sir Paul Boffa Avenue and the Marsa Industrial Estate. That announcement said parking was free and the passenger paid only the normal bus fare.

Treat those as launch details rather than a permanent tariff guarantee. Check the signs at the entrance for the current parking charge, opening time and any restrictions before leaving the car.

Marsa works as a connection point rather than a dedicated Valletta shuttle. The current Malta Public Transport network includes Route 110 between Marsa Park and Ride and Pembroke Park and Ride. Stops identified in the government launch information as Xwieni and Baċir also provide access to routes serving Valletta, Mater Dei and southern localities. Search the intended destination and return time in the current planner instead of relying on the original list of routes.

Pembroke Park and Ride

Malta Public Transport currently uses Pembroke Park and Ride as a bus terminus. Published route information includes Route 110 to Marsa Park and Ride, Route 14 to Valletta and routes 120 and 121 towards Xgħajra, alongside other services in the Pembroke and St Julian's corridor.

That confirms the transport connection, but it does not establish that the parking area follows Floriana's price, opening hours or shuttle model. Check the entrance signs and identify the correct return stop before using it as a car park. A route beginning at “Pembroke P+R” is a normal scheduled bus unless the operator specifically states otherwise.

Ta' Qali and Addolorata connections

Ta' Qali can be useful when the final destination is Mater Dei, University, Rabat or Mosta. Current route information shows:

• Route 403 between Ta' Qali Park and Ride and Mater Dei, serving the University area;
• Route 404 between Ta' Qali Park and Ride and Rabat; and
• Route 405 as a Ta' Qali Park and Ride–Mosta circuit.

At Addolorata, Route 402 runs between Paola and Mater Dei and serves the University area. Malta Public Transport has identified that connection as Addolorata Park and Ride in its published network information.

For both sites, use the route page for the selected date and direction. A route number alone does not prove that the first and last journeys suit your schedule. Check the parking signs as well, because the current public route pages do not set out full parking tariffs, closing times or overnight rules.

Ta' Xħajma Park and Ride in Gozo

Ta' Xħajma is a multi-modal hub in Gozo. From 31 May 2026, routes 302 and 303 were scheduled to serve the facility on their way to and from Victoria. The government stated that each route operated hourly, producing two scheduled connections per hour towards Victoria when both services ran as planned.

Those routes also serve localities including Nadur, Ramla, Xewkija, Għajnsielem and Qala. The best route depends on the direction of travel, so check the stop sequence rather than boarding whichever number arrives first.

What will parking and the onward journey cost?

Do not assume “Park and Ride” means one universal ticket.

• At Floriana, the published €0.40 daily parking charge includes its dedicated shuttle.
• At Marsa, the 2021 launch information described parking as free and the scheduled bus fare as separate; verify the current entrance terms.
• At Pembroke, Ta' Qali, Addolorata and Ta' Xħajma, check the parking conditions on site and treat an ordinary scheduled bus as a separate journey unless an official notice says otherwise.

If the onward leg is a scheduled public bus, normal ticket and Tallinja-card rules apply. A personalised Tallinja card may provide free travel on eligible regular services, but it still needs to be tapped when boarding. Plan the return before parking

The most common mistake is confirming the outward connection but not the journey back. Before leaving the car:

1. Search the return journey for the actual day and expected time.
2. Confirm the route direction, stop name and stop code near the destination.
3. Check the final practical departure, not merely the final service listed.
4. Review current service alerts for diversions or temporary stops.
5. Read the car-park closing and overnight-parking rules at the entrance.
6. Save the car's location, zone or bay on your phone.
7. Allow time to walk from the arrival stop back to the vehicle.

Do not build a flight, ferry, medical appointment or other fixed-time commitment around the final possible bus. Use an earlier service and decide on a taxi fallback before setting out. Our bus routes and timetables guide explains how to check both directions and current disruptions.

Security, rental cars and accessibility

A Park and Ride facility is still a public parking area. Close the windows, lock the car and remove bags, electronics, passports and visible valuables. Photograph the parked location and any relevant entrance sign, particularly if its wording differs from an older online listing.

With a rental car, check whether the agreement restricts parking, access roads or overnight use. Keep enough time to retrieve the car, refuel if required and return it before the rental deadline.

If anyone in the group uses a Blue Badge or mobility aid, do not assume that every facility has a suitable bay beside the correct stop or that every transfer is step-free. When Park and Ride is not the best option

Park and Ride is usually worthwhile when central parking is scarce, the onward service is frequent and the visit lasts long enough to justify the transfer. It may be worse than another option when:

• the return is after the car park or shuttle closes;
• it is a Sunday or public holiday and the intended shuttle does not operate;
• the journey needs multiple changes or a long wait;
• the group has heavy luggage, a pushchair or mobility needs that make the transfer difficult;
• several people can share a direct taxi at a competitive total cost; or
• a bus or ferry already runs directly from the starting point.
