Valletta Parking and CVA Charges Explained

Valletta uses a Controlled Vehicular Access system, usually called CVA, to calculate charges for vehicles entering and remaining inside a defined part of the capital. Verify the latest details with Controlled Vehicular Access.

CVA is separate from parking. Paying a CVA charge does not reserve a space and does not allow you to ignore resident bays, yellow markings or other parking restrictions.

How CVA works

Cameras use automatic number-plate recognition at entry and exit points. The system records how long a vehicle remains inside the CVA boundary and calculates any charge.

There is no barrier or ticket machine when entering. This makes it easy to cross the boundary without realising it, so check the official CVA boundary map before driving into Valletta.

Current Valletta CVA charges

The official tariff page lists the following charges:

Charging normally applies Monday to Friday from 08:00, but access after 14:00 is free. Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays are free all day. The official tariff page also states that remaining hours outside the charging period are free.

Check current CVA tariffs immediately before travelling because hours, exemptions and charges can change.

How to pay

CVA sends amounts due to the registered vehicle owner. Online payment, bank transfer and other methods are available through the official system.

If you are driving a rental car, the bill normally reaches the rental company. Ask the operator how CVA charges are passed on and whether its contract adds an administration fee. Do not assume the charge was included in the rental price.

Late-payment increases apply under the official tariff rules, so registered owners should not ignore a CVA invoice.

CVA exemptions

Some vehicles and users may qualify for an exemption or credit, but eligibility and registration requirements vary. An exemption should not be assumed until it has been accepted by CVA.

The official site provides separate exemption procedures. Blue Badge possession does not by itself mean that every CVA journey is automatically free; check the specific procedure relevant to the vehicle and journey.

On-street spaces inside Valletta are limited and many are reserved or controlled. Always check bay markings and upright signs.
