Malta Bus Fares and Tickets: Prices and Travel Cards

You can pay for a bus journey in Malta when you board or buy a travel card in advance. The right option depends on how many journeys you expect to make, which services you will use and whether the card needs to cover more than one traveller.

Bus ticket prices

The published adult fares for tickets bought on board are:

You can pay the driver using cash, a contactless bank card or a compatible smartphone or payment device.

A ticket bought on a regular bus remains valid for two hours. You can transfer to another eligible service during that period without buying another ticket. Keep the ticket as proof of travel.

The bus-only Explore Flex offers include day routes, night routes, Airport Direct and special services. Malta Public Transport also currently includes Airport Direct with its unlimited travel cards, while excluding the separately branded Tallinja Direct routes from the standard Explore Adult and Explore Child products. Check the exact inclusions before buying if a direct service matters to your plans.

12 Single Day Journeys card

The €19 card includes 12 journeys on regular day routes, with free transfers during the two-hour validity period. It can be shared, making it useful for couples, families or groups taking occasional trips.

The card is valid for six months from its first use. Different deductions may apply on night, special and direct services, so check the current terms before using it outside regular daytime routes.

Explore Flex passes

The four-day bus offer costs €21 and the seven-day offer costs €27. Both are for one person and cannot be shared.

Explore Flex can also combine bus travel with a Gozo high-speed ferry return, harbour cruise or sightseeing product. These packages cost more than the bus-only offer. Buy one only if you expect to use the added service.

Explore Adult and Child cards

The Explore Adult card costs €25 and covers seven consecutive days on regular day routes, night routes, Airport Direct and selected special services. It excludes the separately branded Tallinja Direct services.

The Explore Child card costs €7 for children aged 4-10 and is also valid for seven days. Children younger than four travel free and do not need a card.

Which option offers better value?

• One or two trips: pay on board.
• Occasional trips for several people: consider the shareable 12-journey card.
• Frequent travel over four days: compare the €21 Explore Flex offer with individual tickets.
• Frequent travel over a week: compare the €25 Explore Adult card with the €27 Explore Flex offer and their different inclusions.
• Airport Direct travel: choose a product that explicitly includes it or pay the direct fare. Check Fares for the latest official charges.

Where to buy travel cards

Travel cards are available through Malta Public Transport sales offices, ticket machines and authorised outlets. Some offers can also be purchased or managed through the Tallinja app. Use Sales Offices and Ticket Machines for current availability and purchases.
