Malta to Comino Ferry Guide: Routes, Tickets and Departure Points

Passenger boats travel to Comino from northern Malta and from Mġarr Harbour in Gozo. The service is different from the large Gozo ferries: schedules are more seasonal, boats are smaller and operators may sell either simple transport or a wider excursion.

Where do Comino ferries leave from?

• Ċirkewwa in northern Malta
• Mġarr Harbour in Gozo

Comino Ferries Co-Op publishes daily round trips from Marfa and Ċirkewwa to the Blue Lagoon, with a crossing of about 20 minutes each way. Other licensed operators serve Comino from Malta or Gozo under their own timetables.

Check the exact meeting point on your ticket. Ċirkewwa and Mġarr each have several quays, and the Comino boat does not depart from the same boarding lane as a large vehicle ferry.

Ferry or boat tour?

A ferry ticket normally provides transport to Comino and a return journey. A cruise or boat tour may include:

• A longer coastal route
• Cave visits
• Several swimming stops
• Food or drinks
• A fixed programme and return time

Do not assume the cheapest ticket and a full-day cruise are the same product. Confirm the departure point, landing place, return options and what happens if weather stops the service.

Comino Ferries Co-Op currently lists a €15 adult round trip and €7 round trip for children under 10, with a cave trip included. Prices and inclusions vary between operators and can change during the season.

Do you need a Blue Lagoon landing pass?

Anyone stepping ashore within the managed Blue Lagoon area generally needs a free landing pass with a QR code. The Malta Tourism Authority offers three daily access slots:

• Morning: 08:00–13:00
• Afternoon: 13:30–17:30
• Sunset: 18:00–22:00

Children under five do not need their own pass when accompanied by a parent or guardian. A reservation can cover up to four people, and availability is limited.

The Malta Tourism Authority explains that ferry transport and the landing pass are separate. However, Comino Ferries Co-Op currently states that its own boarding pass includes Blue Lagoon entry and no extra QR is needed.

The practical rule is simple: ask your chosen operator whether it issues or arranges the landing authorisation. If it does not, reserve the free pass yourself through the official Blue Lagoon access system before travelling.

Choosing your return time

Check the last return before boarding. Do not rely on the departure board for another operator, as tickets and return arrangements may not be interchangeable.

Make sure your return journey fits inside or immediately after your Blue Lagoon access slot. If your operator allows a return to Gozo instead of Malta, remember that onward travel from Gozo requires a separate Gozo Channel or Gozo Highspeed ticket.

Travelling from Gozo

Local boats leave from Mġarr Harbour. Buy from an identifiable operator, confirm the exact return location and keep the ticket. Check or book through Blue Lagoon Booking Terms.

If your accommodation is elsewhere in Gozo, allow enough time for the connection using public transport in Gozo or a Gozo taxi.

What to take

Comino has limited facilities compared with Malta and Gozo. Bring:

• Water
• Sun protection
• Suitable footwear
• A charged phone containing your ticket and any QR code
• Any essential medication
• A dry bag or protection for valuables

Ask before bringing a bicycle, large suitcase, pushchair or bulky beach equipment. Operators may refuse an item or charge an additional fee.

Weather and accessibility

Small-boat services are sensitive to wind and sea conditions. Check the operator's notice on the morning of travel and avoid planning a tight flight or ferry connection after the trip.

Step-free boarding cannot be assumed. Contact the operator before booking if a passenger uses a wheelchair or requires assistance, and describe the mobility aid clearly.
