Food and Restaurant Prices in Malta

Food budgets in Malta vary more by shopping and restaurant habits than by a single “average.” The bands below are planning estimates checked against live supermarket catalogues and published restaurant menus on 29 August 2026; they are not official fixed prices.

Dietary-specialist products, frequent imported brands, alcohol, delivery and resort-centre convenience push budgets upward. Children’s ages and packed lunches change a family estimate substantially.

Build a budget from your own basket

Price 15–20 repeat groceries at two nearby retailers, using unit prices and the same pack quality. Add delivery or transport. For eating out, open three current menus in the locality and price one realistic order including drinks. National Statistics Office inflation releases explain movement over time but do not replace a present-day basket.

Charges that change the bill

Ask whether bread, cover, water or amuse-bouche is charged; whether fish is priced by weight; and whether sides are separate. Check supplements on set menus and wine pairings. Malta’s Price Indication Regulations require indicated consumer prices to include VAT and other mandatory taxes or charges. Optional additions and clearly chosen extras can still increase the bill, so resolve ambiguous specials before ordering.

For delivery, add service, small-order and delivery fees at checkout. For restaurants, check whether a service charge is already included.

Tipping without paying twice

Tipping is discretionary rather than a substitute for a stated mandatory charge. Review the bill for “service,” then decide whether to add anything for good service. If paying by card, ask whether the terminal tip goes to staff; cash is an alternative when appropriate. Do not add a second percentage automatically because a screen prompts you.
