Best Restaurants in Malta: A Practical Shortlist

Malta’s “best” restaurant is the one that fits the meal you are actually planning. A tasting menu in Valletta, a waterside lunch in Gozo and a quick family supper solve different problems. The shortlist below uses current Michelin recognition, an official restaurant website or menu, clear location information and a useful reason to choose the venue. It is not a claim that we anonymously reviewed every restaurant.

Michelin, established local or casual: what changes?

Michelin recognition is useful evidence about cooking, but it does not mean every listed restaurant is formal or that an unlisted restaurant is poor. A star indicates Michelin’s assessment of high-quality cooking; the Guide also lists recommended restaurants without stars. Expect starred tasting-menu restaurants to require earlier booking, more time and a higher budget.

An established local restaurant can be a better choice for rabbit, bragioli or a relaxed group meal. Casual bakeries and pastizzerias are better for inexpensive snacks. Compare like with like: do not judge a counter-service pastizz against a multi-course dinner.

Verify before you book

1. Open the restaurant’s own menu and note whether it is à la carte, fixed or tasting-only.
2. Confirm the day’s opening hours and the last kitchen order—not just the building’s closing time.
3. Ask whether a deposit is refundable and what counts as a late cancellation.
4. State allergies, coeliac requirements, vegan needs and mobility constraints before paying a deposit.
5. Ask whether outdoor seating, a harbour view or an accessible table is a request or a guarantee.
6. Check the MTA licensed-establishment register when licensing matters to your decision.

A defensible way to choose

Use three filters: the food you want, the journey home and the total bill. A restaurant with a perfect menu can still be the wrong booking if the ferry timing is tight, the party cannot manage Valletta’s slopes, or drinks and supplements move the meal beyond budget. Shortlist two venues, compare their own menus on the same day and book the one whose current conditions fit.
