Family Restaurants in Malta: A Parent’s Checklist

“Children welcome” is not the same as family-ready. A useful family restaurant can confirm highchairs, changing facilities, suitable portions, service timing and what any play area actually provides.

Play-area questions parents should ask

Ask whether the play area is indoors or outdoors, visible from the allocated table, fenced, shaded and open during your sitting. Confirm the intended age range, surface, footwear rules, maximum number of children and whether staff supervise it. Unless the venue explicitly provides staffed childcare, parents remain responsible.

Weather can close outdoor equipment; private parties can make a room unavailable. Ask for the fallback before promising children a play area. Check whether the route crosses a car park, stairs or a service path, and whether baby-changing facilities are in a room every caregiver can use.

Timing, noise, food and cost

Reserve an early sitting when children need a quicker, quieter meal. Ask if food can be ordered immediately and whether the kitchen will stagger adult and child dishes. For allergies, speak to a responsible staff member about ingredients and cross-contact; “kids’ food” is not automatically allergen-safe.

Calculate the whole bill: children’s meals, drinks, shared starters, cover or bread charges and any service charge. Ask whether birthday cakes carry a plating fee and whether a deposit is refundable. Put highchair, pushchair space, allergy and celebration notes in writing.
