Tallinja On Demand: How to Book and What It Costs
Book Tallinja On Demand in Malta, with current operating areas, weekend night hours, fares, payment methods and accessibility information.
Tallinja On Demand is an app-booked shared minibus service operating at night within a defined area. It matches passenger requests and uses selected bus stops as pickup and drop-off points. Read Terms and Conditions before relying on the summary here.
It is not a door-to-door taxi and it is not included in the free bus scheme for personalised Tallinja card holders. Verify the latest details with Tallinja App.
Where and when it operates
Malta Public Transport currently lists the operating area as:
- Sliema
- San Ġwann
- St Julian's
- Swieqi
The published hours are Friday to Sunday from 19:00 until 03:00. Because the coverage area and schedule can change, check the service map in the Tallinja app before making plans.
For scheduled services outside this area, see our Malta night buses guide.
How to book
- Download the Tallinja app.
- Create or sign in to your account.
- Select the Tallinja On Demand option.
- Choose the available pickup and drop-off points.
- Select the journey and confirm the booking.
- Follow the app's pickup instructions and vehicle updates.
The service uses selected bus stops rather than any street address. The app may propose a nearby pickup point and shared route based on other bookings.
Fares and payment
The current published fares are:
| Payment method | Fare |
|---|---|
| Tallinja card | €2.50 |
| Credit or debit card in the app | €3.00 |
| Each additional passenger on the same booking | €1.00 |
Payment by bank card is handled through the app. A personalised Tallinja card needs sufficient credit because free travel on regular buses does not extend to On Demand trips.
Our Tallinja card guide explains when credit is required.
Travelling with other passengers
You can include more than one person in a booking. Confirm the number of passengers before payment so that the app assigns enough seats and calculates the correct fare.
Tallinja On Demand is a shared service. Other passengers may board or leave during the trip, and the route may not follow the shortest private-car path.
Wheelchairs and pushchairs
Malta Public Transport describes the six low-floor minibuses as wheelchair accessible. The app allows passengers to request wheelchair or pushchair access during booking.
Make the request when reserving rather than after the vehicle arrives. Travellers who need specific assistance should also review our accessible transport in Malta guide.
On Demand or another late-night option?
Choose On Demand when both ends of the trip fall inside the operating area and an available pickup suits your plans.
Consider another option when:
- The app does not show a suitable journey.
- Your destination is outside the service area. Use Tallinja On Demand to reach the appropriate official service.
- You need a guaranteed private pickup.
- You are travelling with more luggage than a shared minibus can conveniently carry.
Compare scheduled night buses and taxis in Malta before a late journey. Availability is not guaranteed until the booking is confirmed in the app.
