Valletta Guide: What to See and How to Plan Your Day

Start early, walk the central grid and bastion viewpoints, then choose a major site such as the Grand Master’s Palace, MUŻA or Fort St Elmo based on current access.

A good Valletta day moves downhill

Upper city

Republic Street, the co-cathedral area and Upper Barrakka Gardens form an easy first route.

Waterfront and harbours

Lifts and ferries connect the bastions with the waterfront and Three Cities route.

Closures matter

Heritage Malta regularly publishes partial closures and special notices.

Decide before you arrive

• Which one ticketed site matters most?
• Is there a closure, ceremony or cruise-day crowd?
• Can everyone manage steep streets and steps?
• Will lunch be booked or flexible?
• What is the final return service?

A practical walking route

1. Arrive near City Gate and start with the central streets before the busiest period.
2. Choose one major interior such as St John's Co-Cathedral or a museum; confirm current access. Confirm the latest times on Opening Hours.
3. Walk to Upper Barrakka Gardens for the Grand Harbour view.
4. Continue through the quieter streets and bastion edges rather than staying only on Republic Street.
5. Use the Barrakka Lift for the waterfront if it fits the route.
6. Cross by ferry to the Three Cities only if there is enough daylight and energy.
7. Return by bus or ferry from a clearly identified stop or landing.

Half day or full day?

Use a half day for the city streets, gardens and one interior. Add a harbour crossing, major museum or Fort St Elmo only for a full day.
