Three Cities Guide: Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua

Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua form the Three Cities. Their waterfronts, fortifications and residential streets make a strong companion to Valletta across the Grand Harbour. For current official information, see Visit Malta.

Use the harbour ferry where practical, focus on Birgu and one major site, then continue through the waterfront connections rather than trying to cover every street.

A low-stress Three Cities route

1. Take the harbour ferry from Valletta and confirm the return timetable.
2. Begin around Birgu waterfront and Collachio streets.
3. Choose Fort St Angelo or another major interior after checking the current Heritage Malta opening hours.
4. Walk toward Senglea for the harbour viewpoint.
5. Add Cospicua's waterfront and streets according to time and mobility.
6. Stop for food away from the tightest schedule.
7. Return to the ferry landing with a backup bus or taxi plan.

Birgu

Fort St Angelo, the marina and historic lanes are the main concentration of sights.

Senglea

The bastion garden provides a classic harbour viewpoint.

Cospicua

The dockside and connections help tie the walking route together.

Plan for the group, not the map

• How much uphill walking is comfortable?
• Which fort or museum is actually open?
• When is the last convenient ferry?
• Does anyone need step-free access?
• Is an evening event changing access or transport?

Allow at least half a day

The cities are close together but historic streets, viewpoints and interiors take time. Do not combine all three with a rushed Valletta checklist unless the group enjoys constant walking.
