Malta 3-Day Itinerary: Valletta, Mdina and the Coast
Use a realistic three-day Malta itinerary covering Valletta, the Three Cities, Mdina, Rabat and a weather-dependent coastal choice.
Three days is enough for a strong introduction if each day stays geographically focused. Trying to add Gozo, Comino, Valletta, Mdina and several beaches can turn the trip into transport rather than travel. For current official information, see Visit Malta.
Use day one for Valletta, day two for Mdina and Rabat, and day three for the Three Cities or a coastal experience selected for the weather. Verify the latest details with Heritage Malta Sites.
A balanced three-day plan
- Day 1: explore Valletta, one major interior and the Grand Harbour viewpoints.
- Add the Three Cities by ferry only if energy and opening times allow.
- Day 2: combine Mdina and Rabat with one substantial historic site.
- Use the evening for a waterfront or relaxed local meal rather than another crossing.
- Day 3: choose either Gozo, a beach/Comino day, or southern Malta according to season.
- Keep the sea-dependent day movable until the forecast is clear.
- Confirm airport transport separately from the sightseeing plan.
Three days means three geographic clusters
Day 1 — Valletta
Walk the historic core and choose one major museum or fort rather than rushing every attraction.
Day 2 — Mdina and Rabat
Combine the walled city with catacombs or Domvs Romana, allowing for evening atmosphere.
Day 3 — Harbour or coast
Use the Three Cities for history, or choose a beach or boat plan only when conditions suit.
Choose the third day deliberately
- Is swimming or history more important?
- Can the group handle a full ferry day?
- Does weather support Comino or a beach?
- Is the departure time compatible with a distant day trip?
- Which attraction must be booked?
Do not use arrival and departure days as full days
Allow for airport travel, check-in and luggage. If the trip contains only two complete days, remove a cluster rather than compressing all three.
