Accessible Tourism in Malta: Transport, Hotels and Attractions
Plan accessible Malta travel by confirming step-free rooms, bathrooms, transport, gradients, surfaces, attraction access and assistance.
Accessibility varies across Malta’s modern facilities, historic streets, boats and archaeological sites. “Accessible” in a listing is too broad to confirm a traveller’s individual needs. For current official information, see Visit Malta.
Ask precise questions, request measurements or photographs where needed and obtain written confirmation from accommodation, transport and attractions. Verify the latest details with Heritage Malta Sites.
Check the complete route, not only the attraction entrance
Accommodation
Confirm the full route from street or parking to room, bathroom, breakfast and emergency exit.
Historic areas
Valletta, Mdina and fortifications can include gradients, stone surfaces and steps even when parts are accessible.
Transport
Scheduled buses are low-floor, but capacity, stops and ferry boarding conditions should be checked for the actual journey.
Questions that 'accessible' does not answer
- Is the full visitor route step-free?
- What are lift and doorway dimensions?
- Is an accessible toilet available and open?
- Can staff assist with boarding or transfers?
- Where may an accessible vehicle stop?
Plan an accessible visit door to door
- Describe the person's actual mobility, transfer and assistance needs.
- Contact the attraction for the specific route, toilets, lifts and companion policy.
- Check pavements, gradients and the distance from the stop or drop-off.
- Reserve accessible transport where required.
- Confirm ferry boarding and mobility-device limits directly with the operator.
- Carry essential equipment, medication and a backup contact.
- Leave enough time for a different entrance or boarding process.
Ask again close to the visit
Temporary lift faults, works, events and sea conditions can change access. Confirm important dependencies shortly beforehand.
Common traps
- Treating a lift icon as proof of a fully accessible bathroom or entrance.
- Booking the only workable transfer without a cancellation fallback.

Build a fallback with equal dignity
Choose an alternative activity the group genuinely wants, not merely somewhere to wait if the first plan becomes inaccessible.
