Malta’s international restaurant scene makes plant-based eating manageable, but traditional-looking vegetable dishes can contain tuna, anchovy, cheese, egg, meat stock, butter or lard. Ask about the whole recipe.

Directory labels can lag behind menu changes. Prefer an official current menu and call when a full vegan meal, not a modified side dish, is required.

Maltese dishes that can work—with questions

Bigilla, white-bean salad, caponata, vegetable soup, ħobż biż-żejt and pea-filled snacks can be vegetarian or vegan, but recipes vary. Ask about fish or meat stock, anchovy, tuna, ġbejna, ricotta, egg, butter, lard and honey. Pea pastizzi are not automatically vegan because the pastry fat and egg wash may differ.

At a mixed kitchen, ask whether grills and fryers are shared. For an allergy, use precise allergen language; vegan preparation does not automatically control nuts, sesame, gluten or soy.

Groceries and clear communication

Large supermarkets such as Greens, Welbee’s, Lidl and Arkadia carry changing plant-based ranges. Read the ingredient and allergen label rather than relying on shelf placement. In English, say “vegan: no meat, fish, dairy, egg or honey” when ambiguity would change the order. “Vegetarian” should still be clarified if fish stock or anchovy is a concern.
