Grapes and styles to recognise

Malta’s two indigenous grape names worth learning first are Girgentina, used mainly for white wine, and Ġellewża, used for red and rosé styles. Producers also grow international grapes and blend them with local varieties.

DOK, IGT and what the label tells you

DOK Malta and DOK Gozo are controlled designations of origin. IGT Maltese Islands is a broader geographical indication. These schemes concern origin and production rules; they are not a universal quality score. Compare producer, grape, vintage and style as well as the banderole or indication.

A restaurant’s “local wine” may be bottled in Malta from different grape origins. If Maltese-grown grapes matter, ask for the exact designation and bottle label.

Producers and tastings to compare

The official Wines of Malta wine trail lists certified vintners. Current producers include Marsovin, Delicata, Meridiana, Ta’ Betta and Gozo-based estates. Do not assume a retail cellar is open for a walk-in tour.

For each visit, check whether the booking is a vineyard walk, production-cellar tour, seated tasting or meal. Confirm language, duration, number and size of pours, food, accessibility, cancellation and whether children may attend. Rural estates require a taxi or non-drinking driver; book the return journey before the tasting.

Buying a bottle

Read origin, producer, vintage, grape, alcohol level and bottle size. Check storage conditions, especially if a bottle has sat in a sunny window. Compare the same bottle across a winery, supermarket and restaurant rather than treating the restaurant markup as a quality signal.

Travellers should check airline baggage, customs and destination-country allowance before buying several bottles. Security rules and duty limits depend on the route, not on the winery’s willingness to sell.
