Gozo Restaurants: Localities, Shortlist and Ferry Planning
Compare Gozo restaurants for local food, seafood, casual meals and special occasions, with ferry, transport and locality advice.
Gozo rewards locality-first planning. A dinner in Xagħra or Xlendi may be simple when you are sleeping nearby and awkward when you must catch a ferry back to Malta. Fix the return journey before choosing the restaurant.
Current options for different meals
| Restaurant | Locality | Why shortlist it | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ta’ Frenċ | Xagħra | Destination restaurant with published service times and menus | Special occasion |
| Al Sale | Xagħra | Michelin-listed meats and seafood in the village square | Polished but less formal |
| Tmun | Mġarr | Michelin-listed option convenient to the ferry harbour | Dinner before or after a crossing |
| Level Nine | Mġarr | Published tasting menu and elevated harbour setting | Tasting-menu occasion |
| Country Terrace | Għajnsielem | Wide harbour views and à-la-carte menu with dietary markings | Scenic group meal |
The list is deliberately short and verifiable. Waterfront villages also contain many seasonal restaurants; check the current menu and opening status rather than relying on an old roundup.
Victoria, Mġarr, Xlendi, Marsalforn or a village?
Victoria offers the broadest central choice and bus connections, but driving and parking become busy. Mġarr is best when ferry access dominates the plan; harbour-side traffic and parking can still take time. Xlendi and Marsalforn provide bay atmosphere and seafood-led menus, with more seasonal variation and exposed waterfront tables. Xagħra and other villages give a quieter setting and destination restaurants, but evening buses are less forgiving and taxis should be arranged.
Choose the locality that reduces the risky leg of the evening. A sunset table in Xlendi is poor value if everyone watches the clock for the ferry.
Ferry and transport plan
If staying on Malta, check the current Gozo Channel schedule and decide which crossing you will target before reserving. Leave a buffer for the drive, parking and any vehicle queue. Foot passengers should check the bus connection from the restaurant to Mġarr; do not assume a late bus meets every sailing.
If staying on Gozo, confirm the return taxi at booking time for rural venues. The driver should not drink; Malta’s alcohol limits are not a planning target. If a tasting includes wine, use a taxi or appoint a non-drinking driver.
Ask the restaurant about deposits, the final kitchen order, outdoor-table weather arrangements and dietary preparation. Continue with Maltese wine, waterfront restaurants or the Maltese Food Guide.
