Mobile Phones and Home Internet in Malta: Newcomer Setup
Choose a Malta SIM and home broadband, compare GO, Epic and Melita, check coverage, contracts, installation and number portability.
Malta's main consumer networks are GO, Epic and Melita. For arrival week, a prepaid SIM/eSIM is the simplest choice; choose home internet only after checking the exact building, contract term and installation date. Coverage can differ inside thick limestone homes even where an outdoor map looks strong.
Arrival-week mobile checklist
- Check the phone is unlocked and supports the provider's bands/eSIM.
- Bring passport/ID; providers may require identity registration.
- Choose prepaid or a no-contract/rolling plan until your usage is known. As a dated reference, GO advertised a newcomer no-contract plan at €14.99 a month in August 2026; compare live offers from all three providers.
- Test signal at home, work and the actual commute before taking a long contract.
- Check included local/EU data, fair-use limits, international calls, roaming, expiry and top-up rules.
- Keep the original number active until banks, e-ID and two-factor authentication have been changed safely.
Number portability lets you move an existing Malta number between providers. Do not cancel the old service before the port completes.
Home broadband comparison
Ask each provider to check the exact apartment, not just the postcode. Compare:
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Available technology | Fibre, cable/fixed network and mobile home broadband behave differently |
| Guaranteed/estimated speed | Headline “up to” speed is not the speed at your device |
| Upload and latency | Important for video calls, cloud work and gaming |
| Contract and early exit | A 24-month bundle is risky on a 12-month lease |
| Installation and router fees | These change the first-month cost |
| Moving-home rule | Confirm whether service can transfer and what happens if the new home is unserviceable |
| In-home Wi-Fi | Thick walls may require mesh units; first test by Ethernet at the router |
Get the total payable over the minimum term in writing, including installation, equipment, promotional expiry and price after the offer.
If service is poor
Run a wired speed test, restart once, record dates/results and report the fault in writing. Keep the ticket numbers. Escalate unresolved contractual or quality complaints through the provider's complaints route and then the Malta Communications Authority's consumer process where appropriate.
