Enrolling a Child in a Malta State School
Prepare a state-school application in Malta with identity, address, residence, educational and health records, including the route for foreign learners.
State-school registration depends on the child’s age, locality and previous school situation. Foreign learners may use the International Learners registration route and should follow its current document list. For current official information, see Education in Malta.
Contact the responsible admissions office before the intended start date and prepare identity, address, residence and school records. Do not assume a nearby school is the allocated placement.
The address, child's age and documents drive enrolment
Eligibility and locality
The official service covers new entrants, out-of-locality cases, foreign students and transfers. Check Admission into Maltese State Schools for the current service and contact route.
Documents
Applicants may need identity cards, proof of address, lease and ARMS evidence, plus previous education records.
Language support
Discuss the child’s language and learning needs during registration so the receiving school can plan.
Prepare a state-school enrolment
Document and translation folder
Prepare clear scans plus originals of:
- Child's passport/identity document and Malta residence card or application evidence
- Parent/guardian identity and contact details
- Full birth certificate showing parentage
- Custody order, guardianship papers and other parent's consent where relevant
- Proof of Malta address, normally the registered lease/ownership evidence and a recent utility/address document requested by the route
- Previous school reports, current year/grade evidence and leaving/transfer letter
- Vaccination record and important medical/allergy/medication plan
- Additional educational-needs assessments, individual education plan and specialist reports
- Recent passport photographs if requested
Documents not in Maltese or English should be accompanied by a certified translation into one of those languages. Civil-status/custody documents issued abroad may also need apostille or legalisation depending on the issuing country and application request. Do not translate away the original school grade: attach a short explanation of curriculum, years completed and date of birth so placement can be assessed.
The live International Learners checklist controls and the directorate may request further evidence. Ask which originals must be presented and whether an electronic school record can be sent directly.
- Confirm the child's year group and the state-school route for your address.
- Ask the responsible education office for the current document checklist.
- Collect identity, residence, address, school and medical records.
- Arrange certified translations when specifically required.
- Submit through the current official channel and keep the reference. Use Registering a Child in a State School to apply or register through the official route.
- Respond to assessment or document requests.
- Confirm school, start date, uniform, transport and first-day arrangements.
Questions before choosing accommodation
- Which school or college serves this address?
- Can enrolment begin before residence documents are complete?
- What records must come from the previous school?
- Is language or learning-support assessment required?
- Who confirms the final placement?
Do not assume a nearby school is the assigned school
Check the current placement rule and availability before making a housing decision around a school shown on a map.
Common traps
- Signing housing because of one school before placement is confirmed.
- Sending original documents by ordinary post without retaining copies and evidence.

Prepare the child, not only the paperwork
Ask who the child should meet, what to bring, which language support is available and how parents receive notices from day one.
