Malta uses the euro and participates in SEPA. Residents can compare banks and payment institutions, but onboarding evidence, fees, branch access and processing time differ. Check How to Open a Bank Account for the current service and contact route.

Compare total fees and practical access, prepare identity and proof-of-address evidence, and ask for the account’s Fee Information Document before choosing. For current official information, see Single Euro Payments Area.

Choose an account by the payments you must make

Opening checks

A provider may ask for identity, address, occupation and source-of-funds information.

Basic accounts

MFSA explains access to payment accounts with basic features for legally resident consumers who meet the conditions.

SEPA

Euro credit transfers and direct debits operate within the shared European framework, but provider fees and limits still matter.

Set up everyday money access safely

  1. List salary, rent, bills and international transfers the account must handle.
  2. Compare banks and regulated providers on eligibility, fees and cash access.
  3. Ask for the full onboarding document list before the appointment.
  4. Prepare identity, address, tax and source-of-funds information.
  5. Keep an existing payment method active during onboarding.
  6. Test salary receipt, transfers, card limits and bill payments.
  7. Enable secure alerts and protect recovery methods.

Questions before opening the account

  • Can this account receive my salary and pay local bills?
  • What address and tax-residence evidence is accepted?
  • What are the monthly, card, ATM and international-transfer fees?
  • How long does onboarding normally take for my profile?
  • How is access restored if my phone is lost?

Do not arrive with one way to access money

Account approval is not instant or guaranteed. Keep a backup card and enough accessible funds for deposits and the first weeks.

Mistakes that cause avoidable problems

  • Choosing by monthly fee while ignoring card, cash and transfer charges. Confirm the current amount on Payment Accounts Fees Comparison Tool.
  • Sharing one-time codes or approving a payment because a caller claims to be the bank.

Verify the provider

Before sending money or documents, check the institution and communication channel independently; do not follow payment instructions changed only by email.
