Water Polo and Swimming Clubs in Malta: How to Join
Find Malta aquatic clubs for swimming, water polo and artistic swimming by ability, season, pool, registration and training load.
Malta’s aquatic clubs can provide learn-to-swim, competitive swimming, artistic swimming and water-polo pathways. The club name may emphasise water polo while its programmes cover several disciplines, so ask about the current entry group rather than assuming.
Competitive water polo requires strong swimming; a beginner may need a swimming pathway first.
Choose the discipline and entry group
Describe age, unaided swimming distance, stroke ability and previous club experience. Ask whether the club offers an assessment, learn-to-swim group or direct water-polo introduction. Confirm minimum swimming standard and whether new members are accepted during the current season.
Use ASA Malta to identify the official aquatic pathway. Named clubs include Sliema, Sirens, Neptunes and San Ġiljan in Malta and Otters in Gozo. Ask each current club contact whether it offers swimming, water polo or both and which pool, season and age group accepts a new member.
The coach should use an assessment or trial to place the swimmer by age, water confidence, unaided distance and stroke ability. A child interested in water polo may first need a learn-to-swim group; a strong recreational swimmer may still need technique work before entering the club training load.
Check pool and seasonal changes
Training can move between pools or change between winter and summer competition. Record every likely venue, training time and transport requirement. Ask about outdoor conditions, changing rooms and parent access for children.
Understand registration and competition
Confirm ASA or club registration, medical requirements, insurance, team selection and expected competitions. Ask when a swimmer becomes eligible and how transfers between clubs work. Keep copies of forms and payment terms.
Price equipment and time
Add membership, registration, pool access, swimwear, caps, team kit, competitions and travel. Ask how many sessions are recommended versus compulsory. For children, balance the training load with school and recovery rather than assuming more sessions always mean better progress.
Ask how the winter and summer season change pool, timetable, registration and match travel. Price compulsory sessions and equipment separately from optional competitions, and confirm whether a family pays the same membership when the swimmer is temporarily unavailable or changes training group.
