Padel is usually the easiest of these racket sports for a social group to start; tennis has the widest development pathway; squash gives an intense indoor session with two players. Court availability, partner level and travel often decide which one becomes sustainable.

Compare public or pay-and-play access with club membership before committing.

Choose the sport and format

Padel is normally played as doubles and rewards social coordination. Tennis offers singles, doubles and structured junior pathways. Squash needs less total space but demands repeated movement in an enclosed court. Book a coached introduction if rules, court positioning or safety are unfamiliar.

The Malta Tennis & Padel Federation (MTPF) is an official route to affiliated activity, while Marsa Sports Club brings tennis, padel and squash facilities together. A beginner should ask for coaching, a social group or an introductory block rather than book an advanced club session solely because a court is available.

Ask how court booking works

Confirm booking length, member priority, guest fees, cancellation deadline, floodlight or peak supplements and whether equipment rental is available. Ask if the price is per court or per person. Save proof of cancellation when weather affects outdoor courts.

If you do not have a partner, ask about player matching, beginner groups, club ladders and organised social sessions before paying. Confirm whether a guest or pay-and-play user can book directly, must be introduced by a member, or may only reserve off-peak courts.

Find compatible partners

Use club ladders, beginner groups, coaching sessions or organised socials rather than repeatedly booking with mismatched players. State your recent playing history and preferred intensity. For juniors, ask how groups are divided and whether competition is expected.

Compare membership with pay as you play

Estimate realistic monthly court hours, guest use and coaching. Add racket, shoes and balls. Some private clubs bundle multiple facilities, which only saves money if you will use them. Trial the venue at your normal time to test parking, court condition, changing rooms and atmosphere.

Compare the full membership or joining charge with the per-court pay-as-you-play fee and any guest supplement. Coaching may be billed separately even at a members’ club, so calculate court time, lessons and equipment over the same three- or twelve-month period.
